Majors with Highest Enrollment: Business administration and management; elementary education and teaching; parks, recreation and leisure facilities management.

Special Study Options: Distance learning, double major, exchange student program (domestic), independent study, internships, student-designed major, study abroad, teacher certification program. Degree Completion program for adult students and a distance education program for rural Alaskan Native adults. Special programs offered to physically disabled students include note-taking services, tape recorders, tutors.

FACILITIES

Housing: Coed dorms, cooperative housing, several theme houses, such as the Nordic Skiers House for ski team members. 75% of campus accessible to physically disabled.

Special Academic Facilities/Equipment: Alaskana collection; GIS lab gym with pool; Student Center with weight room and indoor climbing wall; outdoor recreation center with classes and rental equipment; lake for canoeing and kayaking; trails for running, skiing, hiking, biking, etc. connected to city’s trail system.

Computers: 100% of classrooms, 100% of dorms, 100% of libraries, 100% of dining areas, 100% of student union, 100% of common outdoor areas have wireless network access. Students can register for classes online. Administrative functions (other than registration) can be performed online.

CAMPUS LIFE

Environment: City.

Activities: Drama/theater, literary magazine, music ensembles, student government, student newspaper, yearbook.

Organizations: 15 registered organizations, 1 religious organization.

On-Campus Highlights: Student Center, climbing wall and weight room, pool, lounges in Grant Hall and in Carr Gottst. Environmental Initiatives: Kellogg Farm dedicated to organic and sustainable enterprises. APU does not use paper plates, plastic silverware, etc. Also paperless initiative. Committed to building a LEED level student center.

Basis for Candidate Selection: Application essay, academic GPA, rigor of secondary school record. Recommendation(s), standardized test scores, alumni/ae relation, level of applicant’s interest. Extracurricular activities, talent/ability, volunteer work, work experience.

Freshman Admission Requirements: High school diploma is required and GED is accepted. 4 English, 3 mathematics, 2 science, (1 science labs), 2 foreign language, 1 social studies, 1 history.

Transfer Admission Requirements: College transcript(s), essay or personal statement, statement of good standing from prior institution(s). Minimum college GPA of 2.0 required. Lowest grade transferable C.

General Admission Information: Application fee $25. Regular application deadline 8/15. Notification on a rolling basis, beginning on or about 1/15. Nonfall registration accepted. Admission may be deferred for a maximum of 1 year. Credit offered for CEEB Advanced Placement tests.
