OVERVIEW

Stony Brook University is a public school, which belongs to the State University of New York (SUNY) system. This university has enrolled more than 16,300 undergraduates in total, offering classes on campus and over the Internet. Moreover, about 33.2% classes of Stony Brook have fewer than 20 students.

The university was founded in 1957 and has grown fast ever since. It offers multiple study programs to students with diverse teaching approaches. Stony Brook is a typical suburban university, located on the North Shore of Lang Island in the New York City, covering an area of 1,454 acres.

Stony Brook University offers degrees in bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate’s programs. The vast majority of its students are enrolled as undergraduates pursuing a four-year bachelor’s degree. It should be noted that students can also choose classes for minors or double majors, and many other study options, including combined degree programs, are available as well.

ACCREDITATION

Stony Brook has been a member of Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1957. Many schools of the university have also received academic accreditations from National Accrediting Agency.

Stony Brook is also well known for its several research centers and institutions. Advanced research centers include the Marine Science Research Center, which has won much reputation in this field. The university also co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory, the New York Center for Computational Sciences and some other study centers with a couple of universities.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the university are required to possess high school diplomas. General Educational Development (GED) is equally effective. It also requires applicants to take standardized tests like SAT or ACT. At the same time, the university also requires a general college-preparatory program. Among all non-academic factors, a successful work experience or volunteer work experience usually gives the applicant an advantage.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

The tuitions and fees for year 2011-2012 is USD 6,820. Students spend USD 1,368 for life expanses on average and USD 10,714 for accommodation.

The university offers two kinds of scholarship to its students based on the students’ qualifications. One is called Need-based Scholarships, while the other is called Non-need-based Scholarships. The former one usually provides students with a scholarship worthy USD 7,273-7,842, while the latter one offers students USD 3,729-3,797.
