OVERVIEW

The University of Houston is a state university in Houston, Texas. With about 40,000 students, it is the third largest higher education institution in the state of Texas, and has been widely recognized as a top-tier research university.

The university was founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College, and wad given the present name in the year of 1934. Its official campus is located in southeast Houston, known as University of Houston-University Park from 1983 to 1991. The campus includes five core areas and districts, including inner campus, the Professional District, the Wheeler District, the Arts District, and the Stadium District.

The University of Houston offers degrees in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs, and it also offers some combined-degree programs such as pharmacy, accounting and engineering. Before graduation, students are required to take some core courses including English, social sciences, history, sciences, arts/fine arts, mathematics, and humanities.

ACCREDITATION

The University of Houston is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s, professional and doctoral degrees.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Every applicant is required to prepare materials including the application, the application fee of $50, high school transcript, and test scores of SAT or ACT. Factors such as class rank, secondary school record, standardized test score, academic GPA, recommendations, etc. are all taken into consideration during admission.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

The tuition and fees is USD 6,270 for in-state students and USD 15,570 for out-of-state students every academic year. There are some other required fees, which amounts to about USD 2,730, and the book expense is USD 1,100 on average.

Various financial aids are offered at the University of Houston, from scholarships on the basis of academic merit, to loans on the basis of financial needs. Other types of financial assistance, such as work-study, grants, spring or summer aids are also offered. Statistically, about 58.4 percent of the fulltime students receive certain type of financial aids at the University of Houston.
